Roger Maris was a right fielder in Major League Baseball who is primarily remembered for breaking Babe Ruth's single-season home run record (60 home runs in the 1927 season), in 1961, a record that would stand for 37 years. In 12 Major League seasons, he played in seven World Series and won three championships. Maris was traded by the Yankees to the St. Louis Cardinals after the 1966 season. In 1960, his first season with the Yankees, he led the league in slugging percentage, runs batted in, and extra base hits and finished second in home runs (one behind teammate Mickey Mantle) and total bases (four behind Mantle). He was recognized as an outstanding defensive outfielder with a Gold Glove Award, and also won the American League's Most Valuable Player award. In 1961, Maris hit 61 home runs, and was awarded the Hickok Belt for the top professional athlete of the year, as well as winning the American League's MVP Award for the second straight year.
